Here's a selection of responses from a fictionfolk questionnaire. Not every question is answered, but it gave us a lot to think about. Only Maddy and Jyliet took it, although there are other fictional members of our system.
1. What's your fictional identity (hearttype, kintype, etc)?
Maddy: I'm a fictive of our self-insert OC Georgie from a Twin Peaks!AU roleplay with our spouse.
Jyliet : I'm a fictive of our self-insert OC Georgie from the subsequent roleplay where our OCs are in an alien magic cult and also partly from the novella we wrote ( sometimes !) ! I'm also a Nyssa of Traken fictionflicker .
2. If you have multiple, do you have one you're closer to than the others, or is more important to your identity overall?
Jyliet : Nyssa is a fun person to be when we are deep in the Doctor Who trenches , but I would not exist at all if I was not Georgie .
4. What's your favourite part about being fictionfolk?
Maddy: I love my source. I love the roleplay itself, and I love the show it's based on. It's dramatic, emotional, eerie, unsettling, and stylish. Twin Peaks is one of the best shows ever made, for all its flaws. I love rereading the roleplay and seeing the origins of where my memories come from in the words in the Scrivener file. The little quirks of my inner world were manifested in word choice and grammar and image inspired by a beautiful existing narrative. Every moment where Georgie is on the page, there I am.
Jyliet : I love being a fictional character existing in the real world ! How extraordinary . I love that I get to live life and create things in ways I couldn't when bound to a story . Yes , I love my source , and I love being the person in my source , but I love experiencing the real world more . While I can't do the same kinds of magic I could in my source here in this world , I don't need it . Don't want it . I get to be the person shaped by it and its consequences , but I do not have to operate within its bounds anymore .
10. Tell us about a time you've experienced species/identity euphoria as a result of one of your fictional identities.
Jyliet : Maddy and I both get euphoria from art of Georgie ! We've commissioned many pieces , and the feeling is spectacular every time . :D
11. Do you experience any shifts (mental, phantom, dream, etc) of your fictional identity? Share a bit about those and how they feel!
Maddy: Yes. They're mostly mental or emotional. I get more reactive to certain triggers, and I feel more cravings for things I did in source that would be bad for us. Most of the time they're unpleasant because I was very unhappy for the majority of the story. If it gets too bad, I'll turn into a dissociative mopey mess.
Jyliet : My shifts are nicer . :) I was much much much happier in my story . I can get such a rush . Wind picks up around my soul , sloshing it around in our body . I feel hotter , brighter . I also experience cravings , but I also feel freer . Less weighed down by reality . More in tune with the elements , the body , the act of performing motions . I like to cook while shifted . Makes the experience more visceral and satisfying .
12. Do you have any canonmates (if applicable)?
Jyliet: Yes !! I do !! My beloved systemmate Teresa is also my canonmate . I have many feelings about our relationship that are beyond the scope of this discussion . They are big and many and messy and full of love .
13. Do you have any sourcemates (if applicable)?
Maddy: Teresa is a sourcemate. Someone in our spouse's system is also kind of a sourcemate. He's the character who appears in our sources, but he's not from any one specific source, including our own.
14. Do you wish to seek out canonmates/sourcemates? Why/why not?
Maddy: No, never. The roleplays are deeply personal and will never be distributed, so no one else has access to our specific canons to know them. We would not accept anyone's claim that they were of the same canon as us without them having read it, let alone write it. For the same source... that would be jarring to discover a Georgie based only on the information we've put on our website or if someone discovers the novella. If they're novella!Georgie, then they still wouldn't even have the same canon as Jyliet because Jyliet's canon contains the roleplay, too. If they're websiteinfo!Georgie, then that's whatever, but that's not her source, only summaries, so we wouldn't be sourcemates.
Jyliet : Like Maddy said ! :) Otherwise , I don't consider my Nyssa flicker to have a " canon " . The identity doesn't come with the same sense of personal history as my fictive!type for me . Sourcemates are fun ! I don't seek them out , especially not now with the flicker inactive , but I'd be delighted to hear from a fellow 5 companion !
15. Do you have a favourite piece of fanart/fanfic/etc that ties into your identity? Share it (with credit)!
Jyliet : Our favorite depictions of Georgie are our commissions by Capi Solsikke ( which you can find on her gallery page ) . We worked on a zine with them several years ago and fell in love with their art style ! Writing this has made me want to commission another piece ... I love that in the first portrait we gave Georgie horse ears . Georgie's relationship to horses has varied over the years . Now her animal is a raccoon , not a horse , but the horse ears are evocative of story beats that are fond , if frightening , memories .
17. Does your fictional identity differ from source in any way/is it canon divergent? Explain a bit about that!
Maddy: My gender's a little different than my source's. The original gender was still influenced by our predecessor, and as I've grown I've lost some of the genderfuckery that he had going on. For instance, at one point in the rp I tell Teresa that I'd also like to be her "boyfriend" as well as "girlfriend." That's not true for me now. Girl all the way. There's also a relationship in the rp that I would absolutely not pursue now. It caused a lot of drama, though!
18. Are there aspects of your fictional identity that you previously questioned, decided weren't a part of your identity, but you still look fondly upon? (Past 'types, etc).
Jyliet : Recognizing Nyssa as a fictionflicker has been soothing . We have not watched much Doctor Who in several years now , but that's okay ! That 'type still resonates with how I see myself now vs. how I was in my source , so it's a sign of my growth as a person , but it feels fine to be released from the obsessive pull of the identity while we were passionately absorbed in Doctor Who .
24. If you decided to 'link a fictional character, who would it be and why?
Jyliet : Roderika from Elden Ring !! :D Even though she starts out as a milksop craven ( her words ) , she comes into herself . She's magically adept and grows more powerful . She's loyal and dedicated and good-hearted . I like to be those things , too . And Teresa says Avrana Kern . Another bossy , opinionated , incredibly powerful , alien divine being .
28. Have you ever questioned being a fictionbased archetrope? If you already are, what's your archetropal identity?
Jyliet : Georgie in my source is absolutely the Fool , but that's not me . Maybe sometimes I am Foolish , but I would like to think that I am more discerning now . The archetrope does not appeal to me as an identity , but it is so fun putting Georgie into situations where she is .
30. Have you ever had a fictotype turn out to be a fictionflicker or vice versa? What was that like?
Jyliet : Yes ! I originally thought Nyssa was a fictotype . We stopped watching Doctor Who very suddenly , and at first I felt lost . Abandoned . But that feeling ebbed . I no longer feel like a part of myself is missing . I know that should I return to the show , it would come back , and I will be glad for it , but until then I can rest .
